Experiments in Light

At the heart of both photography and the natural world is light. Light affects how we see, feel, and move through space. In this body of work I satiate my curiosity of light by capturing its properties and how they relate to the camera. I explore the properties of reflection, refraction and how light can be manipulated before entering the camera sensor. By obstructing the source of light with mirrors, prisms, and other reflective objects, the images take on supernatural properties that cannot be captured by the human eye.

Further, in this study of light I take the creative liberty of manipulating color. The addition of vibrance to several of the images contrasts with the scientific look into the properties of light I am exploring. I show the form of the subject as a balance between an experiment and a work of art to give a serene quality to the work. The light surrounding each subject is the only thing that grounds them in the image. By exploring unique properties of light through its manipulation I gain a better understanding of how it affects all aspects of life.
